A Warner Bros. Television production assistant named Amanda Smith has been injured in a Batwoman on-set incident and is paralyzed from the waist down, reports Deadline. The incident occurred March 11 under Vancouver, Canada’s Georgia Viaduct. Production on Batwoman was put on hiatus two days later due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
“A valued member of the Batwoman production team was recently injured during the preparation of a filming location in Vancouver,” a WB TV representative said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with her for a speedy recovery. We are working closely with WorkSafeBC to provide any and all requested information. We continue to work to protect the health and safety of all our crews, casts and employees.”
WorkSafeBC is the Workers’ Compensation Board of British Columbia, who according to Deadline have already launched an investigation into the incident.
The series is currently on episode 17 of its first season.
“While doing her job as a production assistant, the bucket of a lift lowered onto her head,” said Tyler Mazzucco, a colleague of Smith’s who has set up a GoFundMe for her. “She underwent emergency spinal surgery to repair the damage. Unfortunately, with this type of surgery, there is no way to know if it was successful until she undergoes significant therapy. She has a burst T-12, and a T-11 ASIA A. She underwent a T-11-T-12 Laminectomy, and is fused from T-10-L2. She is currently paralyzed and cannot feel anything from the waist down, however we are holding out hope that with time and rehabilitation, she might regain sensations in her legs.”
The GoFundMe has already surpassed its original $50,000 goal, with it now being adjusted for a $100,000 aim.
Deadline reports that some of Batwoman ‘s producers have “reached out” to Amanda Smith and her family to offer some type of unspecified assistance.
