Summary
As Lois delves deeper into a mystery whose answers could shake the entire DC Universe to its core, the Question hunts the people responsible for an attempt on the famed reporter’s life. But do they want her dead because of what she knows or to stop her from finding out more?
Positives
Mike Perkins’ cover is great. I didn’t even notice the puzzle pieces at first glance which are a really cool detail.
The interior art, also by Perkins, is great. I love his style. The characters all look great; there’s a lot of definition and an expressive nature. There’s cool stuff done with the backgrounds for Question. It adds a bit more dynamic color to the issue.
Lois’ conversation on the plane is interesting. It tackles the fact that there is an attack of journalism right now that is unfairly directed at legitimate reporters. And while there are reporters who do everything correctly both in terms of facts and morality, there are the exceptions. Even in the story itself, we’ve seen reporters spread the lie that Lois is cheating on her husband because they don’t have all the facts. It’s a complicated issue and I like that Lois is confronted with a little bit of that.
I like that Renee’s Question takes more inspiration from Batman than anything else. That is the main vigilante she’s interacted with so it makes sense that she would adopt some of his methods to be a vigilante herself.
Negatives
The story is moving a little slow. Very little is accomplished in this. Lois encourages a whistle blower to speak up and Question starts an interrogation but no answers are given. Maybe in the context of the full story, this will flow better. But this issue on its own is kind of dry.
Verdict
This issue is fine. There are some solid moments throughout. Greg Rucka is a great writer so the dialogue is great and the characters feel consistent and engaging. And of course, Perkins’ art is amazing. But it’s a little slow. I don’t think the issue gets enough done. It feels like its struggling to reach the 12 issue length but the execution is solid.
