‘Joker’ Will Officially Receive An R-Rating

Joker will officially receive an R-rating.

Todd Phillips big screen adaptation has received praise from both fans and critics alike and all we’ve seen is a few photos and one trailer.  Now Joker, the spin-off origin story of Batman’s greatest villain, will officially receive the R-rating; confirms filmmaker Todd Phillips.

In a new Instagram post, Phillips shared a new photo of star Joaquin Phoenix putting on the clown make-up with the title “finishing touches” for the October release.

What has caught the attention of the fans more than how gritty and awe-inspiring Phoenix looks is a fan interaction Phillips had in the comments section.  The a fan asked Phillips about the MPAA rating in which the director replied:

“it will be Rated R.  I’ve been asked this a lot.  Just assumed people knew”

Joker is set in 1981 and follows Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) a failed stand-up comedian whom is forced into the criminal underworld of Gotham City.

The film has been described as having the tone of a Martin Scorsese gangster movie.  Phoenix has described the movie as feeling more like a low-budget indie instead of a major comic book movie.  Joker won’t be the first comic book movie to receive the R-rating following in the likes of Deadpool and Watchmen.

Joker will hit theaters on October 4th.
