Suicide Squad Sequel Moves Forward Without Will Smith

Deadshot - DC Comics News

Will Smith’s run as Deadshot in the 2016 film, Suicide Squad was one of the few high points of the film. However, it seems that Smith will not be returning for the sequel.

Sources say that scheduling was the primary factor for Smith’s departure and that the studio and Smith are still on good terms.

Warner Brothers has proven repeatedly that they are reactive, and that they don’t understand comic book films or their audiences, so it’s safe to say they are worried about this news. However, anyone that reads the comic knows that even though Deadshot is a regular in the series, the team can alternate members at any time. This just opens the possibility for new characters and Smith can return in the sequel’s follow-up.

James Gunn of Guardians of the Galaxy fame has been brought in to write and direct the sequel, despite the controversy surrounding the director. The recent announcement that Jared Leto’s Joker movie was shelved could have something to do with Gunn, since the two have attacked one another on social media prior and have accused one another of being pedophiles. Many fans hated Leto’s run as Joker, but knowing that more than half his footage was cut when Warner Bros. hacked up the film and forced massive re-shoots makes many others believe Leto never had a fair chance as the Crown Prince of Crime.

Are you still interested in a Suicide Squad sequel knowing that neither Will Smith or Jared Leto are involved? Sound off in the comments below.

The release date for Suicide Squad 2 is currently set for August 6, 2021.

Cameron Tevis

Hi, I'm Cameron Tevis and I've been a comic book, anime and film fan my entire life. While I like Marvel and anime my true love is DC Comics. My father, who was a fan himself, introduced me at a very young age to the amazing characters in DC (especially Hal Jordan Green Lantern). I think it's a fantastic time to be a comic book fan and I'm happy I get to write about the company that I love so much. Besides being a DC fan, I am a designer and I recently started a comic book series of my own called Event Cycle 6 published through Aporian Comics. I recently wrote and directed a short film "The Misadventures of Harley Quinn". And most importantly I am now a father to my beautiful daughter Arya Jade!
