James Gunn, after being fired from the Guardians of the Galaxy series by Marvel, is on the verge of returning to the director’s chair for a Suicide Squad sequel. This news was expected, as Gunn wrote the script last year.
According to The Hollywood Reporter:
Sources say that Gunn’s focus is to take the franchise in a new direction with a mostly all-new cast of characters and actors. Sources also say that the project is also very much rooted in Gunn’s vibe, as seen in the Guardians movies.
The 2016 movie directed by David Ayer featured Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, Killer Croc, and others. Harley may be out this time around, as she’s already appearing in Birds of Prey.
THR also speculated on which characters might appear in the sequel.
Warner Bros has announced an August 2021 release date for The Suicide Squad.
