Summary
Lucifer is missing. Having embarked on a dangerous journey to find the mother of his abandoned son, the Prince of Lies finds himself imprisoned and crippled by mysterious forces who seek to torment him for their own terrible ends. Meanwhile: a car is crashed, two witches blind themselves, a tumor speaks its first words, and a perfectly good bowl of oatmeal is left to go cold.
Positives
So, I need to be completely honest before diving into this review: I’ve never actually read any of the previous Lucifer stories. In fact, I’ve only ever read a handful of stuff from the Sandman Universe at all. So I’ll be coming at this from a completely unbiased position with no previous knowledge, other than the Lucifer TV series, which this definitely is not.
Dan Watters joins the DC family to take on this iconic character in this newly rebooted series. His ability to dive into this mythology and turn it into something extraordinary is beyond compare. His dialogue is smart and thought provoking and the overall storyline is incredibly intriguing, making the next issue highly anticipated.
The artwork by Max and Sebastian Fiumara is absolutely gorgeous, and Dave McCaig’s muted colors really set the tone. I also love the look of Lucifer himself. He’s very different from what I’m used to in the TV series, where he’s very polished and clean cut. Instead, here he looks like a hobo, and this look really appeals to me.
Negatives
Maybe it’s just me, possibly because this is my first experience with the comic book version of this character, but I had to read this one a couple of times to really get it all. I’m not saying this is really a negative, but it was my one “complaint” I could come up with. Otherwise, that was a fascinating take on the character of Lucifer.
Verdict
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read the next issue. I hope this allows Dan Watters the opportunity to branch out farther within DC, as I’d love to see his talents brought over to DC proper, maybe to take on some of DC’s darker characters that don’t get much love.
