Summary
The Dynamic Duo are back in action in Batman #55! After engaging in battle with an enemy known as Phantom Pharaoh, Batman and Nightwing engage in a nightly patrol around Gotham City. A mysterious stranger has arrived in Gotham however–and his business there will have consequences for Nightwing and the Dark Knight himself.
Positives
King comes out swinging right away in this issue of Batman #55. Hot on the trail of a villain known as Phantom Pharaoh, the Dynamic Duo are soon fighting an endless horde of mummies until Batman is able to take down this new villain himself. After the takedown of Pharaoh the two engage in a nightly patrol of the city. It’s here within the conversation between the two that we find what makes the dynamic between Batman and Nightwing so interesting. Here King shows them with an almost father and son type of bond, with Nightwing recollecting tales of their old days along the way. There’s even a scene where Nightwing challenges Batman in a contest of sorts and although hesitant–Batman agrees anyway. It’s these few moments where we can clearly see why Nightwing is so necessary in Batman’s life–he makes everything just a little better with his attitude.
Negatives
I have no complaints about this book at all. King does a wonderful job of showing how effective the crime fighting duo of Batman and Nightwing still are, with each scene showing them moving in sync with each other without mentioning any tactics or strategy while battling Pharaoh and his army. Tony does a great job of showing this on every page in great detail–especially with a particular emotional scene at the end. I will not spoil this for my readers but I will say that the ending left me almost speechless.
Verdict
Overall I thought Batman #55 was a great read. It has plenty of action, and a great story to back it up. The ending of the book is what really grabs you though and I can’t wait to read the next issue!
