Summary
With Hank Henshaw, the cyborg Superman, in possession of the Phantom Ring, a power ring designed by the guardians six billion years ago which could access the full spectrum, and having infiltrated the Power Battery on Mogo all is lost.
While the Guardians and remaining Lanterns gather a fleet of Ravagers arrive above the planet ready for war lead by Eon at the beckon of their new master, The Cyborg Supermen, who has promised them a chance to take control of Mogo.
Positives
Green Lanterns #55 is the 3rd last issue in this series, a great series which has shown how Cruz and Baz have grown into full fledged Green Lanterns. With the impending conclusion of the series with issue 57 the events of the last three issues and I’m sure the coming 3, have been perfect. Instead of going out silently, Cruz and Baz have to fight hard against an enemy who has managed to topple the Corp itself.
Mike Perkins & Hi-Fi continue to craft a high detailed and gorgeous world for this final hurrah to play itself out. This particular depiction of Hank Henshaw is ruthless. In the middle of the issue is an amazing splash page showing the Cyborg in excruciating detail. Later in the book we also get to see the Phantom Ring in use and the medium of coloring used sets itself wonderfully apart from the dark colors throughout the rest of this book.
Negatives
Throughout the issue, Hank Henshaw’s name comes up an oddly high number of times, include one 3rd person statement announcing himself. Given his presence during one of the arguably most well known DC Comics events, the Death of Superman, the repetition to ensure readers know his name feels truly out of place.
Verdict
Issue 55 of Green Lanterns is a great read which irons out the wrinkles in the previous issue and lines up the big conclusion to this series!
