DC Comics is the cornerstone of the superhero world, earning acclaim and adulation over its years of quality and domination over the genre. Recently, DC Comics added another “trophy to its case” as Action Comics just joined the Guinness World Record Books for longest-running superhero comic book series ever after 80-straight years of publication.
Debuting in 1938 and created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster, Action Comics broke the mold. In 2011, Action Comics became one of the longest-running comic books with consecutively numbered issues. In 2016, DC Comics returned Action Comics to its original issue numbering, picking up with issue #957. Action Comics also introduced the world to the most famous and recognizable superhero in the history of the world, Superman.
Action Comics received the Guinness Book of World Records award at the San Diego Comic-Con press breakfast. Dan DiDio and Jim Lee from DC accepted the award.
“The release of Action Comics #1000 was a watershed moment for fans of comic books, entertainment and popular culture at large. It’s both exciting and humbling to be recognized by Guinness World Records for this achievement and we’re grateful for the legions of fans that have supported Superman and Action Comics for the last 80 years”
Action Comics issue #1000 sold over half a million copies around the world and featured several stories and art from a legion of DC’s best writers and artists. I was the most pre-ordered comic in history. Action Comics #1001 brings in the writing talents of Brian Michael Bendis, who will also take over the writing for the Superman stand-alone books for the DC Universe.
With Bendis taking over the helm as the writer for both Action Comics and Superman, there is no doubt that the future of DC and Action Comics is very bright and will reign for many years to come.
