Director: Wayne Yip

Writer: Sam Catlin

Starring: Dominic Cooper, Joseph Gilgun, Ruth Negga, Betty Buckley

Summary

As Jesse helps re-invigorate business at Angelville, Tulip and Cassidy’s faith in him is tested when Angelville brings out a side of him that they’ve never seen before.

Positives

A strong episode straight out of the gate with the Saint of Killers paying a visit to Satan himself. With a quick recap of the escape from last season, Satan made it clear someone had to pay. Saint was put through a hellish whipping, but took it strong, making him look like a true force of nature.

During Tulip’s search for a way to break Jesse’s deal with Gran’ma, we found out some truly dark secrets about Jesse’s past, with the revelation that he has had to do some dark things to survive, along with flashbacks to his young days with The Tombs.

Tulip, by the end, clearly chooses Preacher over Cassidy, something we’ve wanted to see for a while. Cassidy had a few funny moments including his “skin suit” idea. I would’ve liked to see a little more of him, especially with his heart break and underlying sneaky plan to steal Tulip, but I’m sure the future will bring more.

This episode set up a lot for the upcoming season, a plan seems to be forming to take out Gran’ma and free Jesse from her clutches.

Negatives

Where is Gran’ma?! The series did such a great job of setting her up in past seasons and we are barely getting any of her on screen. This episode saw no screen time with her. Hitler and Arseface have also yet to appear, the suspense is starting to turn into agony, and causing a loss of interest.

Jesse’s ex made it clear that killing Gran’ma would free Jesse, but the double talk makes it seem like whoever kills her will suffer, most likely Tulip. Tulip just recently came back to life and putting her in another life or death situation feels redundant.

Verdict

Preacher is an incredible series that does not receive the acclaim it deserves. It’s incredibly funny and suspenseful at the same time, the suspense and dark corners it reaches are truly amazing. This is a great episode that delves into character’s pasts and sets up some even more harrowing adventures that everyone can enjoy.
