Review: The Hellblazer #22

[Editor’s note: This review may contain spoilers]

Writer: Tim Seeley

Artists: Davide Fabbri, Christian Dalla Vecchia & Carrie Strachan

Summary

“THE GOOD OLD DAYS” part four! Things have gone downhill for John, and his ex is the reason why. It’s not her fault (she’s possessed), but it’s making their reunion somewhat awkward.

Positives

The cover by Tim Seeley and Chris Sotomayor is cool. It has a fun vibe to it and I like the general look. I’m not entirely sure why a xenomorph is on the cover but it still works.

The interior art features pencils by Davide Fabbri, inks by Christian Dalla Vecchia and colors by Carrie Strachan. Their work is solid. The characters look good and I like the tone that the art sets.

I love how savage the angels are. That’s a really interesting element to the DC universe. A group of angels eat a demon; it’s hilarious.

Negatives

The story has gotten a little too big. When it was random assholes possessing innocents, I was invested. This issue turns it into a giant revenge plot involving a lot of demons and ties to previous stories in this run. It’s a lot less interesting. When it was smaller, it felt intense and personal. Now, it feels kinda of standard.

Verdict

This is an okay issue. I like the art and there are elements that work for me. But the story is a lot less compelling than it was before. It’s not bad; I just think the scale has gotten too big.
