In February we got the heartbreaking news that Joss Whedon decided to exit Batgirl completely. He would not be writing nor directing the film. The only reason he gave at the time was he didn’t have a story to write. At the premiere of Avengers: Infinity War, Whedon broke his silence and finally has given us a more detailed reason.
“It had been a year since I had first pitched the story. A lot happened in that year and I felt some of the elements might not work as well and the story kind of just crumbled in my hands,” Whedon told Variety. “There were elements that I just hadn’t mastered that I… after a long time felt like I wasn’t going to. So, I told people that I didn’t have an idea, which isn’t exactly true. I had an idea, it just didn’t fit in the space that was left for it. It was a little heartbreaking because I was so excited about it, but I’m currently working on something of my own and there’s nothing more exciting than that.”
So there you have it. Since Whedon left the project, Christina Hodson was signed on as the film’s writer. Before Batgirl reaches the silver screen, we will see her in Birds of Prey along with Harley Quinn.
