Watchmen has always been a polarizing film. Those that don’t like it felt it missed some of the metaphorical impact and general genre deconstruction that Alan Moore’s seminal work had.
While promoting his latest film, Rampage, actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan (who played The Comedian in Zach Snyder’s 2009 film) told Variety that he feels it was too far ahead of its time and he was proud of his work. He may be on to something.
Back when the film came out, Superhero films of lesser known characters where not common, as this was before the days of Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy. These days, audiences are more willing to accept the unknown (or at least lesser known) characters. And Snyder’s aesthetic, while still not beloved by critics, is more accepted, and Watchmen has some genuinely beautiful visuals.
Maybe time will prove naysayers wrong and Watchmen will be considered a groundbreaking movie. If not, the upcoming HBO series may redeem it.
