Summary

“Clay”! Here it is: the shocking, heartbreaking origin of Clayface, including his first conflict with Batman! Actor Basil Karlo was on the cusp of fame and fortune…the kind he had dreamed of through his painful childhood…until a accident robbed him of the good looks that took him to the top. But scars don’t make you a monster—only the darkness in your heart can do that—and in the wake of the accident, Karlo’s darkness is revealed!

Positives

Tynion has made this particular annual issue something special, as more often than not these specials usually are a chance to tell a different story. Instead, he takes time to tell a story which fans of the book saw him building up to.  We get to see who Basil was before he became Clayface – a young actor with so much talent and a budding career. The art by Ferreira and Barrows is striking with silky silhouettes and their illustrations of faces, highlighting almost a cameo like quality. Lastly, we get the first time Batman and Clayface meet and fight, a fairly classic battle.

Verdict

Buy as most of the books within the Bat Family have been showcasing Clayface and for good reason , as this book more than pays off what we expect from the character.
