Summary

This is it: part six of “The Domino Effect”! Chagra promised he wouldn’t alter reality until Forager returned to New Genesis, but did anyone actually believe him? Seems our beloved Bug might have. Luckily he’s got a savvy teddy bear and ghost girl around to keep him focused, or else he might fall apart like a house of cards!

Positives

It’s not often a book that is whimsical and a little crazy at times distills down to find some real emotional content.  That’s how issue #6 of Bug! The Adventures of Forager resolves and the whole time it keeps the non-sequitur feel that’s been running throughout the series.  It only makes sense that it would end the same way.  As Forager finally finds family in two places, it is heartwarming to see him gain a sister and surrogate parents as well as a place on New Genesis with Highfather’s family.

The whole series has become a journey about family and how family is not necessarily the one you are born in to.  It’s quite a big statement from a title that’s been high on the high jinks.  It’s not surprising that it’s The Source and Mrs. Source at the “ahem” source of it all.  A plan for all of us….

Negatives

Such a turn could be easily misunderstood, and with that, this title is probably for mature readers mostly because as things go really sideways in this issue and resolve with such a deeply emotional touch, younger readers could possibly struggle with this.  For the mature in the audience, the tonal shift is surprising, but at the same time satisfying.

Verdict

“I did not see this one coming” is a an appropriate tagline for the finale of  Bug! The Adventures of Forager.  The playful series ends on an emotional note as Bug finds a place in the world through the machinations of a higher power.  Don’t miss this if you’ve been reading all along, and if you haven’t, this issue is reason enough to go back and get the previous 5 issues.
