By now, many of the DC faithful have had a chance to go see Justice League in theaters alongside many other moviegoers. Reactions have been mixed to say the least with some fans loving the movie while others saying it feels incomplete or just downright a mess. These comments, alongside relatively average box office returns, has Warner Bros looking to make some major changes at DC Films moving forward and it starts with who’s going to be in charge moving forward.
Since 2016, Jon Berg and Geoff Johns have been in charge of DC Films, a division of DC Entertainment and Warner Bros pictures, and have been responsible in large part for this year’s breakout successes in Wonder Woman and the recently released Justice League. The lackluster box office returns on Justice League (at least compared to other major blockbusters) have placed a lot of pressure on Warner Bros to make some changes and have since decided that Jon Berg will no longer be in charge of DC Films and will be moved from that division to producing within the in-house studios at Warner Bros alongside production partner Roy Lee.
Warner Bros Pictures President Toby Emmerich had this to say about the move in a statement to Variety:
“This is something that Jon approached me about six months ago, and he expressed his goal was to ultimately be a producer at the studio. I first met Jon when, as a producer, he brought ‘Elf’ to New Line, which remains one of the best and most evergreen titles in the library. We’re thrilled that Jon is partnering with Roy and anticipate their company being a valuable source of movies for Warner Bros. and New Line.”
As for Geoff Johns, he will continue to serve as Chief Creative Officer for DC Entertainment and will have more of an advisory role for all future DC film projects. Variety is reporting that Johns will continue to serve under President of DC Entertainment Diane Nelson and will continue to have heavy involvement in several projects for film, television as well as publishing (which includes the comics).
Zack Snyder will continue to serve as an executive producer on several projects including next year’s upcoming Aquaman film and the sequel to Wonder Woman. However, there are currently no plans for him to sit in any director’s chair for any of DC’s future movies.
As of this writing, there is no word yet on who will be taking over as head of DC Films but the studio has said that it hopes to have someone in place in January of next year. As soon as we hear about any appointment, we will report it here at DCN.
