Many were skeptical when Teen Titans Go! debuted as a chibi-style comedy replacing the more serious, grim style of Glen Murakami’s original animated series. Much of the original fan base was disappointed by this change in tone, but Teen Titans Go! eventually found its niche. Now, four years later, the show reached the 200th episode milestone on Friday.
The series began in 2013 and is one of a short list of Cartoon Network shows to get a feature-length film. Variety broke the news after an interview with creators Michael Jelenic and Aaron Horvath where they talked about the show’s desire to be different, saying:
“They’re comic book characters, and we play with a lot of tropes, but it was never intended to be something like the original show would have done with, ‘who’s the villain and let’s save the world.’ The joke is taking a small idea and blowing it up — like going to get a sandwich but having to get parts from the four corners of the universe.”
The comedic style helps explain the shows extremely meta 200th episode where the Titans literally meet their makers in order to stop the world from disappearing. The episode, titled “The Self-Indulgent 200th Episode Spectacular,” stars Michael Jelenic and Aaron Horvath as themselves while the Titans try to animate their creators. This episode is only a sample of the crazy adventures the Titans are taken on in this series.
Even the creators aren’t sure of how much longer the show can last, but things definitely aren’t slowing down anytime soon.
