Review: Wonder Woman #35

[Editor’s note: This review may contain spoilers.]

Writer: James Robinson

Artists: Emanuela Lupacchino, Ray McCarthy & Romulo Fajardo Jr.

Summary

This issue tells the story of the upbringing of Wonder Woman’s twin brother, Jason.

Positives

I like the cover by Bryan Hitch and Alex Sinclair. Paralleling the two as kids and then as adults is interesting. The cover presents a potentially cool premise for the issue.

The interior art features pencils by Emanuela Lupacchino, inks by Ray McCarthy and Romulo Fajardo Jr. Lupacchino is one of my favorite artists and her work is great here. The characters look great and Fajardo Jr.’s colors add a nice mood to the issue.

Negatives

Ultimately, the issue is dull and unnecessary. As an audience, we don’t learn much that we didn’t already know. Except for Hercules’ role in Jason’s life, all of this was talked about in the previous issues. This issue feels like it’s wasting my time and it’s the second time this has happened. There was a pointless issue for Grail not that long ago. This story just started and barely anything has happened but I still feel like it’s been going on forever. The pacing for this arc feels so off.

Verdict

This is a boring issue. The art is strong and worth taking a look at, but nothing else really lands. Nothing happens in this that is essential to the story so far; we learn nothing. It feels like this whole issue could be cut and no one would miss anything. I do not recommend reading this issue.
