Russell Tovey Will Play The Ray In The CW Arrowverse

Russell Tovey, who fans might recognize from such shows as Quantico and Looking, will be playing the role of The Ray in a CW four-part crossover between its major superhero television shows. Tovey has previously played the role of The Ray in the upcoming animated series Freedom Fighters: The Ray.

TVLine.com is reporting that Tovey will be joining the Arrowverse in the upcoming crossover that will be loosely based on Crisis story lines from the comics.

For those unfamiliar with the character, The Ray first appeared in an issue of Justice League of America back in 1973 but was later retooled into what we now know him as in the inaugural issue of The Ray in February of 1992. He is also notable for being an openly gay character in the DC superhero universe.

The Ray is also known for his involvement in the Freedom Fighters and was one of the more notable characters featured in the pivotal Infinite Crisis comic event. The Ray does have a history with Black Canary in the comics but whether or not that will be prominent on the crossover is yet to be determined.

For now you will be able to catch Tovey in the animated series on CW website and the crossover with the television shows will air over two night on November 27th and 28th.

For the full press release describing The Ray is down below:

Raymond “Ray” Terrill was a reporter who discovered a group of government scientists working on a secret project to turn light into a weapon of mass destruction. But before he could report on his findings, the project head exposed Ray to a “genetic light bomb.” The bomb failed to kill him and instead gifted Ray with light-based powers. With these abilities, Ray realized he could go beyond reporting on injustice — he could take action to help stop it. Calling himself The Ray, he was recruited by Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters to fight violence and oppression wherever it exists.
