Fans of the comics will recognize Saturn Girl as the telepathic founding member of the Legion of Super-Heroes, the 30th-Century superhero team that defends the worlds of the United Planets. Though the Legion itself hasn’t been outright shown, this is not the first Legion reference on Supergirl. A Legion flight-ring was shown in Superman’s Fortress of Solitude in Season 1, and Season 2 saw Mon-El – another member of the comic book team – join the show as a recurring character.
It is important to note that the official character bio for Saturn Girl does not specifically reference the Legion of Super-Heroes, but Jackson’s casting does demonstrate the CW’s willingness to utilize those characters, and that Supergirl is ready to delve deeper into the 30th-Century world of superheroes.
