Review: The Hellblazer #12

[Editor’s note: This review may contain spoilers.]

Writer: Simon Oliver

Artists: Davide Fabbri, Jose Marzan Jr. & Carrie Strachan

Summary

Constantine attempts to keep the book away from Marid.

Positives

I really like the cover by Tula Lotay. It’s an interesting concept with the playing card; that’s neat. I also like the duality of Constantine portrayed on the cover. It’s a great image.

The interior art features pencils by Davide Fabbri, inks by Jose Marzan Jr. and colors by Carrie Strachan. The art is okay. Strachan’s colors look pretty good and the characters do look defined. Nothing really stands out to me but it works just fine.

I really like Constantine’s self sacrifice at the end and I like that he genuinely meant it. There’s some nice growth for Constantine in that and I’m curious what happens to him now that the generic sexy lady villain brought him back. How does he deal with his perceived redemption being taken from him?

Negatives

I feel like I’m on repeat but I am not invested at all in what’s going on. It’s very boring. Maybe it’s a taste issue but I’m still having a hard time with this series. I just don’t care.

Verdict

This is an okay issue. The art is fine and there are a couple of moments that work. Unfortunately, I am still pretty bored by this series. I’m not invested in this story and I never feel the stakes. I don’t recommend reading this issue.
