Why David Ayer is Making Gotham City Sirens and Not Suicide Squad 2

Last year, Suicide Squad was released and it was the third film in the build up of the DC Extended Universe. It introduced us to DC’s notorious and dangerous criminals such as Will Smith’s Deadshot, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and the infamous The Joker played by Jared Leto.

Although it garnered $745 million at the worldwide box office (without releasing in China, the world’s second-largest movie-going market), the movie became known a major critical flop. Now even though the film didn’t go as expected, Warner Bros. still greenlit not only a sequel, but a spinoff entitled Gotham City Sirens, and there’s talks of a Joker vs. Harley Quinn spinoff.

Rather than take on the sequel, Suicide Squad director David Ayer previously confirmed that he will be directing Gotham City Sirens. In an interview with IGN, while promoting his Netflix movie Bright at San Diego Comic-Con 2017, David Ayer shed some light on his upcoming DC Comics project:

“It’s a story about three fantastic women who’re trying to find their way in the world and realize that they have more power together than they do individually. I have daughters, and I want to create something that might be able to help them get along in the world a little bit.”

For those of you who are new and don’t know, Gotham City Sirens is a short-lived comic book series created by Batman legend Paul Dini. It focused primarily on three of Gotham City’s notorious female criminals: Catwoman, Harley Quinn, and Poison Ivy. They operated during Batman’s supposed death and when Dick Grayson took on the mantle. As far as we know, the only person confirmed for the film is Margot Robbie, reprising her role as Harley Quinn. As for Poison Ivy and Catwoman, there are several actresses professing their interest in taking on the roles.

Hopefully, we get to hear some great news about Gotham City Sirens in Hall H as Warner Bros. reveal more films on their slate for the DC Extended Universe.
