Diana and Steve return to war and Diana attends a wedding.
Positives
The cover by Jesus Merino and Alex Sinclair is pretty good. The pencils on Diana look great. I also love the colors of the explosion; it makes a great looking cover.
The interior art is by Mirka Andolfo with colors by Romulo Fajardo Jr. It is solid for the most part. Fajardo Jr.’s colors are great as always. His style gives this a spiritual connection to Greg Rucka’s run.
I like Wonder Woman being in the war. Cynically, I imagine it’s an attempt to make the book feel more like the film but I’m still hyped about the film so that’s okay. It does work well; Diana protecting refugees is endearing and incredibly heroic.
Wonder Woman blocks a punch with one of her bracelets and it’s the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. That dude’s hand is never going to work again.
Negatives
While I like the art for the most part, the faces sometimes look off. There are some unnatural expressions throughout the issue that are a little distracting.
Towards the end of Rucka’s run, it was made clear that Etta no longer trusted Diana due to what happened with Cheetah. That has been completely ignored; Etta is beyond excited to see Diana and brings her to a wedding. It’s a little strange given how Rucka’s story ended.
The issue is a little slow; I’m not sure enough happens. It feels like a set up issue. This issue could easily read better in the context of the rest of the story but on its own, it’s a little dull.
Verdict
This is an okay issue. There are some good ideas and I think Fontana has a good grasp on Diana’s character and voice. The setting is cool and most of the art works. It just feels slow; I don’t think this issue reads well on its own. I recommend waiting for the trade on this one.
