Summary
While the “Dark Trinity” of Cerci, Al Ghul, and Luthor are squabbling over power and if they should work together, the Trinity, is having a dinner date. Bruce has invited the alien and the Amazonian goddess to a luxurious dinner to discuss their current lives and their human connection.
Meanwhile, a mysterious cloaked figure stalks the “Dark Trinity” in an effort to confront them. Who could this shrouded figure be, other than Jason Blood! What does he hope to gain from tracking down the worlds greatest assassin and a supreme witch?
Positives
The first thing that struck me when I opened the pages of Trinity Annual #1 was the art. Each character is portrayed in an Olympian way, their physiques are godly while their expressions and poses are theatrical and performance worthy. They feel powerful and to be admired, as the pinnacle of idealism, heroism and power. Yet the scene at the restaurant makes them feel connected and friendly, like you could meet them and talk to them as friends.
Negatives
For all its detailed and immense beauty, I did have problems with a number of things in this issue. The first is with the demon’s appearance. The character is meant to rhyme with every word, and yet only half or less of his speech is written in that way. The ending of this issue felt unnecessary, it creates another enemy that the Trinity must face, when they already have quite a number of challenges laid at their feet. It also beckons a largeness to the conflict that the series wasn’t intended to have.
Verdict
Overall, Trinity Annual #1 is a great read. While it does have some issues, it has action, heart, and a ton of beautiful art that readers will enjoy!
