Summary
The Justice League fights Superboy Pryme while Darkseid invades Gotham.
Positives
I still really enjoy the art by Art Baltazar both on the cover and in the book itself. It’s unique and really sells the tone of the book. There’s nothing else like this right now that I’m aware of. It’s immediately engaging because of how cute the art is.
Baltazar and Franco capture Superboy Pryme really well. His mood swings and tendency to yell at everyone are on full display and it’s fun to see in such a silly story as opposed to the actual stories featuring this character. There are a few cool moments with characters in this. I love that the Joker would just walk right up to Darkseid and tell him that Gotham belongs to the Joker. That’s hilarious and it’s followed by Commissioner Gordon walking right up to the two of them with Robin and Batgirl in order to arrest them or something. It’s pretty great.
I love the sound effects. There are the typical ones you would expect but there are more that are amusing to me. Throw, rope and grab are examples of this. I love the really obvious stuff gets a sound effect; it makes me laugh.
Negatives
While I like the art, Darkseid’s design does nothing for me. I’m not sure what about it bothers me because I like everything else. It just looks off even within the context of this book.
Verdict
This is a fun issue. There are some funny character moments combined with engaging action that is entertaining even for adults. I also like the story being told as ridiculous as it is. I recommend reading this issue.
