Summary
Khan, Lupacchino, McCarthy, and Morey took this opportunity and created for us an origin story for Wonder Girl and how she got her armour. This tale, as the title suggests, digs up her past and old demons come calling for her.
For readers with no knowledge of Cass, this is a great introduction to who she is and what she is about. As a part of that audience, this reviewer is now inclined to see what happens next for the blonde would-be Amazonian.
Positives
The art in this story is really good. The inks and colors done by McCarthy and Morey are vibrant and give a life like tone to the skin in a similar way to some of the work of Tony S. Daniel. Lupacchino, the penciller, has a very soft style and is very aware of expressions which is great for a more emotional story like this one.
Hena Khan’s story is really touching, if a little short. Had Khan had the opportunity to write a full issue I believe DC Comics might have themselves a new writer.
Negatives
Throughout the story there are monsters that appear and are left undefeated by the end of this tale. With how the story concludes they feel unnecessary and a little clunky. Lupacchino’s renderings of characters needs a little more edge or bite to them during intense action panels to really give a sense of stress and force.
Verdict
I really enjoyed this team of creators and I hope that if we get a New Talent Showcase #2 in the next few months that this team will reunite and continue this tale!
