Summary
On the outer edge of the galaxy, a salvage ship discovers a derelict spaceship. The pair of explorers discover that the ship belongs to the Green Lantern Corps, and had served as a beacon.
Positives
It’s great to see Kyle back in action as White Lantern along with Carol Ferris as Star Sapphire. Kyle’s status has been somewhat in Limbo since the cancellation of The Omega Men. However, given this story and his recent reappearance in Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps, it seems Kyle is still going to be an important part of the DC Universe.
Negatives
However, this story seems somewhat vague as to where it fits into wider events in the DC Universe. It seems to show Kyle’s status quo as it was before The Omega Men. Is this story set before that series, or has Kyle’s status quo returned to what it was before that series, or are the events of The Omega Men just being ignored?
Also, this is a very short story, but it seems to be setting up a continuing storyline. New Talent Showcase is a one-shot, and it isn’t clear where the storylines introduced here are going to be followed up on, if at all. Will the story be continued in Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps, or Green Lanterns, or is Kyle going to get a new Rebirth title? Hopefully, the story will get resolved somewhere.
Verdict
This story served as enough of an appetizer to make me realize I would like to see Kyle get a Rebirth title, or at least a prominent role in one of the other Lantern titles. However, the uncertainty over when or if this particular story will be followed up on is disappointing. It’s a promising start, so hopefully the rest of the story will see the light of day before long.
