Summary
John, Kilowog, Mogo and the rest of the Green Lantern Corps are still en route to Warworld, but Hal beats them to the punch and launches a one man attack on the Sinestro Corps. On Warworld, Sinestro soliloquizes Lyssa about his history with Jordan. Despite seeming mad at times, it’s difficult not to feel a little sympathy for Sinestro as he truly sees himself as the hero.
Hal mows through Sinestro’s Corps as Sinestro himself puts a plan into place to increase his Corps’ power. When Lyssa arrives at Guy Gardner’s place of interrogation, guy learns that Hal is on his way.
As the issue closes, Sinestro has unleashed the full power of the Fear Engine with what appears to be a two-fold purpose. Sinestro and his Corps’ rings are rising to unprecedented levels of charge and Guy Gardner is getting a baptism of fear….
Positives
Seeing Hal use his ring to create a series of fighter jets to attack the Sinestro Corps is a nice reminder of Hal’s time in the Air Force and it creates a wonderful visual. The monologue by Sinestro is used effectively to build the tension as the issue builds towards the seeming impossible ring power levels.
Negatives
While this issue served its purpose, without something at the end, it does feel like a “set up” for the finale. There was a definite let down with no real payoff on the last page. Soranik was missed, and one wonders what her role in the coming battle will be.
Verdict
With the tension at 11 this issue did its job in getting us to the one-on-one confrontation between Hal and Sinestro next issue. You’ll be coming back for more, but how many more “final showdowns” between Hal and Sinestro can there be? With no chance at detente between the two, at some point there will have to be a final resolution, maybe this is that story….
