Batman Day 2016: Growing Up With The Caped Crusader!

In honor of Batman Day, I thought I would take a moment and share my love and history with the character!

My first memory of Batman was when I was about five years old watching reruns of the Batman ’66 t.v. show. I was mesmerized by the colorful sets, the over the top villains and a certain Ms. Julie Newmar (Catwoman). Seeing the Batmobile roar out of the Batcave for the first time had my heart racing and sealed the deal, from then on I was hooked.

Once a week, when I received my allowance, I would head down to the local Woolworth’s and purchase Batman related items such as, grappling guns, batarangs, batcuffs, etc. Often I would push the living room tables around the fireplace and walk across them pretending I was walking on the ledge of a building, and jump off as if I were bursting through a window surprising the villain of the week. I would don the Batman costume every Halloween for the next three years.

Luckily, through this time my obsession was fed with the older Super Friend cartoons being in syndication during the week and the current animated incarnation airing on Saturday mornings.

My first comic was a 1970’s issue of Detective Comics where Batman faced off against the Sensei!  Throughout my childhood I was more interested in the toys and shows than the books themselves. It wasn’t until after years of being a Marvel Zombie I picked up Batman #428 (A Death In The Family) and have been reading them ever since. The earliest Batman collectible I still have is my Batman Super Powers figure and the latest being a limited edition golden age Batman Funko Pop vinyl figure.

I also have some Alex Toth Batman original artwork, as well as numerous statues, figures, comics, and prop replicas that have been released in the last twenty years.

My favorite Batman in animation is Batman: The Animated Series. My favorite live action incarnation is a tie between Adam West and Ben Affleck.

The great thing about Batman is there are so many different interpretations of the character and all of them work. From the campy Adam West Batman to the dark and brooding Ben Affleck and everything in between. They all work on some level even though they are all different in personality. I enjoy the dark, serious Batman from the B:TAS as well as the light-hearted Batman from Batman: The Brave and the Bold.

My love of comics started at the age of 5, when visions of mythic beings fought their way across my TV screen. Batman '66, Super Friends, Wonder Woman, and Superman '78 filled my early childhood with imagination and adventure. Soon enough I found the spinner rack! Batman, Justice League and DC's Who's Who kept me coming back for more. I've seen the death of hope, justice broken, a light extinguished, and a universe torn! A kingdom come, the lightning return, a triumph of evil and a multiverse reborn!
