Review: Titans #2

[Editor’s Note: This review may contain spoilers.]

Writer: Dan Abnett

Inker: Norm Raymond
Variant Cover: Mike Choi

In Part 2 of “The Return of Wally West”, the former Kid Flash (what’s his new handle, anyway?) continues his quest to correct history and remember the love of his life, Linda Park. What’s odd is that he remembered Park when he made his way back from the Speed Force in DC Rebirth #1.

With a very abrupt opening, Abra Kadabra has an army of earlier versions of our heroes. Kadabra unleashes the “Pre” Titans  The Original Teen Titans The Post 52, Rebirth, former Teen Titans on the Keystone City. They draw the attention of the real Titans, who quickly learn that their doppelgängers are just as good as the originals.

During the melee, Lilith recognizes Linda Park from Wally’s memories, much to Kadabra’s dismay. He also makes a revelation about Linda and Wally, mentioning that they aren’t supposed to meet yet.

Another quick revelation and potential new romance is hinted between Arsenal and Donna Troy. At the end of our story, Wally finds out he’s not fast enough, and Abra Kadabra hits Tempest with a blast from his wand.

The Positives

The story is fast-paced (pun intended). It crams a lot of action and heart into the pages. This is some good, solid writing.

The Negatives

The artwork reminds me of John Byrne, but it’s a little off. I can’t put my finger on it. It could be Booth’s drawings or Raymond’s inking. I’m sorry to say that I’m not a fan. I also liked Choi’s variant cover more than the actual cover.

The Verdict

Annett and company seem to be trying too hard to recreate a mesh of former Titans books by Wolfman/Perez and Winick. Unfortunately, it falls a little short.
