When we last saw Hal Jordan, he was on the run. Branded a rogue outlaw, when in reality he went undercover in attempts to restore the name and honor of the Green Lantern Corps. He continues his quest, in addition to looking for his comrades, in this new series from Robert Venditti and Ethan Van Sciver.
In Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps: Rebirth #1, Jordan is the by-product of what he used to make with his power ring – a living, sentient construct.
Clinging to existence, Jordan forms a hammer. He then uses the hammer to make a new power ring, and in turn making himself solid and whole again. His actions are felt by others who wield the spectrum of power, including Thaal Sinestro. Shedding his fugitive garb, Jordan dons the familiar uniform of the Corps, and continues the search for his missing fellow colleagues.
Positives
Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps: Rebirth #1 is an audacious step taken by scribe Venditti. And he lays out his plans for Jordan, Sinestro and the Corps so plainly, yet vividly on the pages. And it doesn’t hurt that Van Sciver accents those words with bold and picturesque artwork.
Negatives
In typical fashion, we have the rehashing of the origin of the main character. I’m not really sure if it’s needed. But I can understand using it for readers who are mildly familiar with Green Lantern.
Verdict
On the whole, Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps: Rebirth #1 does a great job setting up the series for future issues.
