Everybody’s favorite clown princess of crime has gone through quite a transformation since her induction into the Gotham family. From her first appearance in Batman: The Animated Series to her many different cameos in the Arkham video game series and now her starring role in Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn has seen her fair share of costume changes. With this being the first time that Mr. J’s main squeeze will be on the big screen, how did the creators decide which version of Harley to use. The character has a certain level of gusto to live up to and I’m sure this was a painstakingly long process. Knowing you can’t please everyone, what angle do you take as a costume designer? How about create an entirely original look. This was probably the smartest road to take in bringing Harley Quinn to life on the silver screen. Margot Robbie, who will be playing the famous psychiatrist turned psychopath, gave us a little insight into how many different costumes they went thorough before settling on the final product.
“I cannot emphasize enough how many outfits, and how many variations of the Harley Quinn costume we tried. We tried the court jester costume, we tried the corset and skirt, we tried leather pants, we tried literally every type of costume possible for her. I really love where we ended up. And who knows, maybe in the sequels we’ll go with the court jester one. I think there’s a world of possibilities.”
Maybe it’s the fanboy in me but I would love to see the original jester outfit at least once or twice on the big screen. If this film turns out to be successful in the DCU, which it will, Harley Quinn could be around for quite some time. An origin story or even a story from the “Gotham City Sirens” would be a perfect place to roll out the black and red jumpsuit. In any case, Margot Robbie will be crushing it as Harley Quinn come August 5th in the feature film Suicide Squad. Don’t miss it!
