‘Red’ Series Coming To NBC

So, you’re probably asking “Why is DC Comics News doing a story on Red?

Here’s your answer: The 2010 movie Red, starring Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren is based on a three-issue comic book mini-series published in 2003 and 2004 by WildStorm imprint Homage Comics, and created by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner. WildStorm Comics was acquired by DC Comics in 1998.

Now, NBC is looking to capture the Red magic by developing it into an hour-long series. Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber, who penned the 2010 hit and the 2013 sequel Red 2, and Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian, who produced both movies, are working on the series adaptation. Lionsgate TV, whose sister company with Summit Entertainment who distributed the features, is producing with Di Bonaventura Pictures Television.

Red involved a group of REDs (Retired Extremely Dangerous operatives) who reactivate themselves after the CIA sends assassins after one of them.

And like the operatives of RED, the 2010 movie was not to be underestimated. The film grossed $200 million worldwide.

And in case you need a refresher on Red, here’s the trailer for the original release:

No word yet on when the Red series will air, or who will star, but you can watch the original now on AmazoniTunes, and VUDU, and on DVD and Blu-ray.
