Last summer, CW President Mark Pedowitz was introduced to a project based on Supergirl. The pitch came from the producers of current show Arrow and then future series The Flash. Pedowitz was leery on bringing another superhero themed show to his network. Now, he’s wishing he picked up the drama. “We hadn’t launched The Flash yet, we weren’t ready to take on another DC property,” said Pedowitz. “In hindsight we probably should’ve gone that direction… Sometime you lose great shows.” Of course now we know, Supergirl was picked up by partner network CBS.

Pedowitz made his remarks at this year’s Television Critics Association (TCA) Press Conference held on August 11. The CW held a joint meeting with sister cable network Showtime.
When asked about a possible Supergirl-Arrow/Flash character crossover, Pedowitz appeared more open than CBS chairman Nina Tassler to the idea. “I leave that to (Supergirl/Arrow/Flash executive producer) Greg Berlanti if they can make it work,” Pedowitz said. “I’m open to crossovers.” And although CW had no plans to do another DC series last season, they moved forward with Legends of Tomorrow when Arrow and The Flash seemed to be doing well with the ratings. And it didn’t hurt when they added well known actors like Brandon Routh and Victor Garber as guest stars on their current shows. “This was a great opportunity to create a third leg of the stool,” Pedowitz said regarding Legends.
