Marvel to be Absent from SDCC

Marvel Studios recently decided that they would probably not be joining the hard-hitters at San Diego Comic Con this year. Ant-Man will be coming out very soon and that will be followed by Civil War and Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Does Marvel just have nothing new to show this year? The more likely reason is that Disney wants to promote their own convention. Marvel Studios had its stamp all over last year’s D23. Fans were treated to the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot and the Guardians of the Galaxy sizzle reel. Now with Disney using their biggest asset, Marvel, to promote D23 does that mean that SDCC will be all DC all of the time? I think it does.

Warner Bros. will definitely take advantage of Marvel’s absence. DC is currently in the works of beefing up their SDCC presence. Besides the obvious looks at Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad what could DC be bringing to the table this year in San Diego? A couple different things would make sense for DC to reveal and I want them all to happen.

New movies could be added to the already enormous WB/DC slate. A Man of Steel sequel or a solo Bats film would be at the top of that list I would think. The Green Lantern of the DC Cinematic Universe could finally be named. There are clearly two front-runners from the corps. that would fill that position. Finally, with the rumors of the movie timeline being moved up, and I know this is a long shot, could we get a look at the core Justice League members all in full costume? We’ve seen how the Trinity looks, but standing next to Aquaman, The Flash, Green Lantern and Cyborg would undoubtedly send shivers down the spine of Marvel.

This has all strictly been DC Cinematic Universe that I’ve been talking about. DC is currently dominating television as well (minus Constantine). At this years con I’m hoping for a deeper look inside Legends of Tomorrow. Maybe even an advanced screening of the pilot. Based on the success of Arrow and The Flash, it would make sense that DC would be hyping the TV universe just as much as the former.
