Superman Fan-Film “A Smallville Man” Is Going Viral!

Check out this beautifully done Superman fan film entitled, A Smallville Man!

Artist Mauricio Abril created A Smallville Man using 150 hand drawn images! The film runs about five minutes and uses the song “Walk” by the rock band Foo Fighters to help pace the narrative!

On his blog, Mauricio explains the meaning of his film:

It explores the relationship between Superman’s past and present through separate stories that take us from the jungles of South America to the quaint streets of his hometown of Smallville. For those not familiar with South America, It’s like America but South. The two story line ultimately converge thematically to show that the “S” on his chest represents not just the power of his alien abilities but also the strength of his humanity.

Mauricio was inspired to create A Smallville Man after watching 2013’s Man of Steel film starring Henry Cavill in the title role. While he enjoyed the film he felt they “missed the mark” on the Kent’s importance in Clark’s life and the  impact they had in shaping Clark’s moral compass. Mauricio went on to say….

What I’ve always enjoyed about the mythology of Superman is that he becomes this great hero specifically because it was the Kents who found and raised him. If he had landed anywhere else, he would have become someone entirely different. So “A Smallville Man” became my outlet for emphasizing that part of the mythology. It became a story about how the essence of what makes Superman the hero that he is and can be traced back to the influence of his parents, in this case his father’s willingness to do the right thing by standing up for someone else.

You can watch the film in it’s entirety below, enjoy! Also, you can watch Mauricio’s previous fan film A Gotham Fairytale starring The Dark Knight further below!

My love of comics started at the age of 5, when visions of mythic beings fought their way across my TV screen. Batman '66, Super Friends, Wonder Woman, and Superman '78 filled my early childhood with imagination and adventure. Soon enough I found the spinner rack! Batman, Justice League and DC's Who's Who kept me coming back for more. I've seen the death of hope, justice broken, a light extinguished, and a universe torn! A kingdom come, the lightning return, a triumph of evil and a multiverse reborn!
