It was reported by Latino-Review today that The Help star Viola Davis was cast as Amanda Waller in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie. This hasn’t been confirmed by DC/WB but that isn’t to say it is false. Viola has most recently been staring in the tv series How to Get Away with Murder. She is a wonderful actress and can definitely pull off The Wall. She has the look and she can act. Doing Amanda Waller justice certainly seems like it is within her wheel house.
If this plays out and eventually gets confirmed that means Davis beat out some pretty outstanding competition. Names like Oprah Winfrey, Kerry Washington, and Octavia Spencer have all been swarming around the role. Honestly any of these women would be perfect for different versions of Waller. Oprah for a more big and powerful presence from the animated Justice League series. Kerry Washington would have done a good job playing the sexy, strict, and conflicted Amanda Waller from the New 52.
There have been a few different incarnations off Amanda Waller over the years. Most recently on CW’s Arrow Waller is played by Cynthia Addai-Robbinson. One of the biggest stars to play The Wall was Pam Grier on, another CW hit, Smallville. Foxy Brown herself donned the red heels and took over an expendable group of soldiers. This will mark this first big screen appearance for Amanda Waller, leader of the Suicide Squad.
Viola Davis could quite possibly be teaming up with the already phenomenal cast of the Suicide Squad movie. Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie, Cara Delevingne, and Jai Courtney are already signed on to play members of the squad. And maybe the best piece of the puzzle, Jared Leto will be the new Joker. So far this film appears to be developing and heading down the right track.
