Do not expect Harley Quinn this season of Gotham, however the appearance of the Graysons has now been confirmed.
Thanks to an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Showrunner Bruno Heller, the master behind ‘The Mentalist’, has confirmed that we can expect a “prenatal Robin” on Gotham. However he also stated and left clear not to hold the fingers crossed waiting for Harley Quinn, at least for Season One of the show. Bruce Wayne and the actor that plays him are too young for a Robin to appear on the show, fact is, Dick Grayson has not been born yet in the timeline of the show, so it will be interesting to see how the writers will introduce the character.
“We’re going to do a prenatal origin story for Robin down the line,” Heller told Entertainment Weekly during the interview.
Heller states the first season is already filled with many comic book characters. To be honest the season feels quite crowded in terms of space, with many comic book characters and not enough time to develop each one of them.
“One of the things about the size and scope and ambitious of this production is that—it’s not that there’s lots of chefs in the kitchen, but there’s a lot of people with opinions and views and inside knowledge,” Heller says. “That aspect of the show—which characters to use and when — is a source of constant discussion. And that may well have been an issue that came up and was dropped. We haven’t got Harley Quinn in it. Riddler’s girlfriend is coming up. And Harley Quinn is definitely planned for later on, but so far no.”
Gotham has already thrown a good amount of comic book nods and easter eggs, however even if we, the fans ask for more, let’s just take a second to think if introducing every villain during just the first season is wise. You will be surprised with your own analysis to this question. Heller points out interesting facts about the choices the production has made, both storywise and marketwise.
“You can’t just keep pumping these characters into the show in a comic book sort of way, because you get the Super Friends effect—which isn’t a bad effect, but then you have spaceships and need to go underwater and get wacky villains and the rest of it,” he said. “You have to work as a character piece first. First it has to be real.”
What do you think of the Graysons coming soon to Gotham, and what about Heller’s plan to introduce various characters who could become The Joker, reminds you of his technique to tease and then reveal Red John in The Mentalist?
