The search for a female director of the highly anticipated solo Wonder Woman film, slated for release in 2017, has led to executive producer/director Michelle MacLaren. Lexi Alexander, who directed Marvel’s Punisher: War Zone, was initially considered, but turned down the position.
MacLaren is currently in talks with Warner Brothers to direct the film that will star Gal Gadot. Charles Roven will serve as producer. Roven is no stranger to superhero films, having served as producer for both the Dark Knight Trilogy and Man of Steel, and is also producing the upcoming film, Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice.
If signed on for Wonder Woman, the film will be MacLaren’s first big-screen project, having previously directed episodes for such hit shows as Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, and The Walking Dead.
The Wonder Woman film will mark the first superhero movie to have a female lead since the 2005 Marvel film, Elektra, starring Jennifer Garner. The expected premiere date of the Wonder Woman movie is June 23, 2017.
