Wow. Futures End has finally starting to become the comic we all hoped it would be. After the initial weeks of build up, the weekly series has finally begun to hit its stride as it delivers twist after twist, and more action than you can handle. Fans of the series will also be excited to see this week’s new teaser images that feature many potential spoilers for whats to come .
POSITIVES
First and foremost is the dialogue. Last week’s issue and this week’s issue have done a wonderful job of filling each conversation with a powerful sense of emotion. It’s my belief that the writers are just as excited as we are to be ramping up the intensity, and their passion translates directly into the dialogue. Stand out moments from this week include the Atom making jokes, Madison scolding Tim, and the horrifying banter between Mister Terrific and Brother Eye. It’s writing such as this that allows less action-packed scenes to stand out, and really bring balance to the entire comic.
The new villain at the end will truly leave fans shocked. It such a great idea for a villain that its surprising it hasn’t been done before. I don’t want to reveal too much about the issue but I will say that this character is from the distant future and will be heading back to cause chaos.
Seeing good guy Ronnie Raymond again in this issue was also a pleasant surprise. Watching the character turn over a new leaf is really uplifting to read. This is especially nice in this series since so much of the plot deals with horrible tragedies and post-apocalyptic futures that need to be prevented. Now if we could just get that awesome Firestorm design back then readers would really be happy.
NEGATIVES
Again this issue has very little to complain about. However there is one plot line that seems to be moving slower than the rest still. Anything that Tim Drake does still seems irrelevant to the rest of the series. This issue and last seem to be tying it in with Ronnie Raymond’s story, but it still lacks the scope and significance that the other plot lines carry.
Verdict
Another solid issue that follows up directly with the shocking results of last week. There’s plenty of action to keep even the most distracted reader engaged. The action is beautifully balanced with a combination of both comedic and dramatic dialogue that makes even the dullest moments shine.
