Review- THE NEW 52: FUTURES END #20

Futures End takes another trip this week to the far future of 35 years from now. This issue has a few gruesome moments so those who generally can’t stomach gore should read this issue with caution. Aside from the gore, this issue continues to deal with aftermath of many major plot lines coming to their climax. While there could have been more action, this issue is still very interesting nonetheless.

Positives The New 52 - Futures End 020-006
Anytime the series travels forward through time 30 years it does the series good. This dark and desolate future reminds readers of the series purpose and helps give plot lines a new sense of significance. This especially helps the plot lines that lack the same excitement as the others. By giving them a sense of significance it assures readers that, while things may seem dull for now, every story line is heading towards something huge.

Red Robin is back this issue, and not just in his bar. Tim Drake fans will be happy to see him diving from rooftops and breaking into buildings, even though he claims to be retired. Previous scenes with Tim have seemed dull and lacked any sort of connection to the rest of the series. This issue however has begun to plant the seeds of the new path Tim is about to forge.

NegativesThe New 52 - Futures End 020-001
I’ve already mentioned previously that this issue was a little dull. The only action comes from Tim Drake jumping between rooftops, but unfortunately that is cut short by a lengthy conversation with Lois Lane. While I understand the need to move the plot forward with dialogue, it would have been nice to have at least one scene that was filled with the super heroic action we all crave deep down.

After a huge reveal two issues ago regarding Green Arrows death, there is once again no follow this issue. Again this type of pacing is likely due to the nature of a weekly comic. With a scope this large it’s very difficult to continually write the about the most popular story lines continually. For those who read FUTURES END: GREEN ARROW #1 like myself, its likely that your counting down the minutes until we get our next look at the Emerald Archer.

Verdict
This issue had some interesting moments that helped moved the plot and set up new directions for the series. Unfortunately the lack of excitement really drags down this issue though. Hopefully the series continues the excellent dialogue featured in this issue but combines it with more of the intense action we’ve come to expect from the series.
