Review: BATMAN ’66 MEETS THE GREEN HORNET #8

WARNING: LIGHT SPOILERS

Summary:

The Dynamic Duo and the Green Hornet Duo face off, but a conveniently-timed robbery right next tot hem distracts Batman and Robin long enough for the Green Hornet and Kato to escape. The Caped Crusader manages to track the culprits to their World’s Fair hideout, but a nasty surprise is in store for him…

Positives:

This is possibly the most action-packed issue in the entire series. We get a brawl between the Dynamic Duo, the Green Hornet and Kato, the aftermath of a robbery, a daring raid of the villain’s headquarters, and a last-minute trap sprung by the Joker/Gumm alliance. This series has been very good, but oftentimes not a lot happens in each issue. That’s understandable, as the writers need to stretch out a single story into twelve issues (not to mention that each issue isn’t exactly long). All of which makes this meaty chapter a pleasant surprise.

I was also pleased that the Dynamic Duo didn’t succeed in taking down the Green Hornet and Kato at the start of this issue as I was half-expecting them to. I cringe a little on the inside whenever a superhero is mistakenly beaten down by another superhero. “Yay! The good guy triumphed over the…other good guy.”

Negatives:

The heavy story progression doesn’t allow for many character moments. There are a few nice character bits here and there, but those who got into this series for the sheer joy of watching the Dynamic Duo and company be themselves may be disappointed.

Verdict:

BATMAN ’66 MEETS THE GREEN HORNET #8 is a meaty, action-packed installment, but lacks this series’s trademark humor.
