Lois Lane, Joker’s Daughter to have One-Shots

In February 2014, the New 52 will have two one-shots hit the stands. This marks the first time the one-shot method has been used since DC’s reboot and the stories will be used to showcase the popular characters Lois Lane and the Joker’s Daughter. Written by Scott Snyder protege Marguerite Bennett, each story will be forty-eight pages with a cover price of $4.99 and will provide fans with entertaining, in-continuity stories.

As a student of Snyder, Bennett excels in the art of horror writing, witnessed in Batman Annual #2, her comic debut. It is expected that her story for Joker’s Daughter will follow a similarly haunting path.

“Joker’s Daughter, […], is cruel, crazy horror—a spiraling descent in the footsteps of her one true father, drenched with the poison of her own toxic psyche,” the author said.

The Lois Lane story will not be nearly as dark, however. Instead, Bennett will be writing more of a science-fiction tale for the famed journalist.

“Lois’s tale is an adventure story—a sci-fi noir, if you will. Lois Lane is the first lady (queen? khaleesi?) of DC Comics, and I was in fits to offer up a story worthy of her,” Bennett said. “There’s an elegance to the structure and a poignance to the plot that I hope won’t strike a nerve so much as twist it, and leave our readers avid for more.”

Bennett’s stories will serve as tales meant to give readers and fans the chance to delve into the worlds of these characters outside of their heroic counterparts. There will be action, adventure, and horror mixed with iconic characters and new faces.

For those unsure about Bennett’s storytelling or whether the Joker’s Daughter is an interesting character, here is Bennett’s description of the Joker’s face, which will hopefully give you an idea of what to expect in the one-shot.

“It’s been through so many chemical contaminations over the years that one could make an argument that it is barely flesh at all,” Bennett said. “I tend to think of the Joker’s face more as a Petri dish than anything else—a colony of toxicity, flesh, spores, and evil that has reached enough equilibrium to maintain the illusion of a face. All that foulness squirming around in the Joker’s soul, made manifest in that leering, grinning mask.”
