First Look: Necessary Evil: Super-Villains of DC Comics
Thursday July 18, 2013 7:00pm – 8:00pm (Room 6DE)

Behind every great superhero is an even greater rogues gallery, and that’s where the spotlight lands in the all-new documentary Necessary Evil: Super-Villains of DC Comics. From the Joker and Deathstroke to Lex Luthor and Darkseid, the film investigates the inner workings of the most nefarious collection of baddies in comics history. Join Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and DC Entertainment for a first-look at a Comic-Con exclusive teaser version of the film, then hear from some of the experts themselves on a panel that will feature bestselling comic book writer and DC Entertainment chief creative officer Geoff Johns, Entertainment Weekly editor Geoff Boucher, and distinguished representatives of DC Comics’s storied history, including Kevin Shinick (Robot Chicken, MAD), Andrea Romano (Batman: The Animated Series), and other notable comics creators, filmmakers, actors and more. Necessary Evil: Super-Villains of DC Comics is narrated by everyone’s favorite villain, Christopher Lee (The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars films), and will be distributed by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment on October 25, 2013.

Below is a in depth look at the panel from DC Comics!

  1. One of the constant challenges for writers is to give the heroes a believable opponent, someone that pushes the hero in a new way.
  2. Talent in the film is talking about some of the biggest villains that have been created over the years: Doomsday, Darkseid and others that strike fear in the reader from the moment they appear on the page.
  3. Fears about ourselves come to life through these villains as they represent the fears we have in our own lives.
  4. You have to believe a good villain *could* win in order to believe the story.
  5. “Suicide Squad is front and center…Lex Luthor is front and center…” –Geoff Johns about Forever Evil, the publishing event coming to DC Comics this fall and into 2014.
  6. According to Geoff Johns, villains are fun to write during the story but not at the end, when the story needs to find a conclusion.
  7. One of the main things about the heroes is the sacrifices they make in order to win, whether it’s something physical, some social sacrifice or something else that makes their journey that much more difficult.
  8. SDCC 2013: Christopher Lee Introduces Necessary Evil
  9. Who’s the panelists’ favorite villain when it comes to origin stories? Some love for Penguin and others, but mostly it comes down to having a tragic beginning.
  10. That’s what makes DC villains so great – They believe what they’re doing is right.
  11. Batman’s lineup of villains getting some serious props as among the best in comics from the panelist.
  12. Is it difficult to create new villains? No, according to Johns, since there’s always a new way to challenge the hero in new ways.
  13. Characters like Flash’s Rogues are more about doing their job in their own way than conquering the world or anything as grand as that.
