Another week, another installment of Adventures of Superman. Check out our review after the jump!
One of the best things about the Adventures of Superman digital comic how it has given creators carte blanche to deliver their own spin on the Superman mythos. Many types of Superman stories have been told throughout the years. But how many have been told solely through the perspective of one of his parents? Rob Williams (2000AD, Ms. Fury) and Chris Weston (2000AD, The Filth, The Invisibles) team up on a tale that explores the world of Superman through the eyes of Martha Kent.
Positives
Williams made a bold decision to tell this story from the perspective of Superman’s adoptive mother. It is definitely the road less traveled, and one that could have resulted in a story that simply does not work. But it does work, and it works wonderfully. Williams’ voice for Martha is so effective and natural. Her concerns are not those of “Superman’s mom,” but rather anyone’s mom. If I had the abilities of the Man of Steel, I can picture my mother talking this way.
Cameos are made by almost every major player in Superman’s world. We see Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, Krypto, and many others. A few weeks ago, there was a cameo appearance by Darkseid which ultimately did nothing for the story. While the same could be argued here, the perspective of the story allows these cameos to feel like natural additions. Also, there’s a good amount of humor sprinkled throughout the issue.
If I could describe Chris Weston’s art in one word, it would be “gorgeous.” This is a serious contender for the best looking issue of this series. It has a timeless feel that would be effective in a comic released today or four decades ago.
Negatives
Lois Lane’s personality in this issue did not ring true to me. There were a couple of faces that looked way too goofy compared to how strong the rest of the art looked.
A couple of 2000AD veterans combine to deliver one of the best Superman stories of the year. A combination of quality storytelling, great artwork and heart make Adventures of Superman #12 a must buy.
